RH Bill finds support from Iglesia Ni Cristo and other religious groups

RH Bill finds support from Iglesia Ni Cristo and other religious groups

Influential religious sect Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) has expressed its support for the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) Bill.

According to the letter of Eduardo Manalo, INC executive minister to the committee on population and family relations, “Since modern methods of contraception, by preventing married couples from having any unplanned pregnancies, assist in supporting the Christian principle, we support their use as long as these methods are empirically not abortifacient.”

The group is also against the idea of natural family planning, calling it "unnatural, ineffective and immoral."

“These so-called birth control methods depend upon abstinence on the part of the married couple when the woman is fertile but allows marital relations only when she is not. These methods are not only unnatural and ineffective but they are also immoral, since they contradict the commandments that God has given to married couples,” Manolo added.

The letter further stated that “the Bible instructs married couples not to deprive one another of intimate marital relations for long, extended periods of time; further, any abstinence at all for a married couple is supposed to be with mutual consent of husband and wife and not for purpose of preventing pregnancy.”

Iglesia Ni Cristo has around 6 million members.

Meanwhile, here are the list of the other faith-based groups which are supporting the RH Bill as well. These were enumerated by Bishop Rodrigo Tano, chairman of the Interfaith Partnership for the Promotion of Responsible Parenthoood (IPPRP), to GMANews.tv:

  • The National Council of Churches in the Philippines;
  • United Church of Christ of the Philippines;
  • Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches;
  • United Methodist Church;
  • Philippines for Jesus Movement;
  • Iglesia Filipino Independiente;
  • Christian and Missionary Alliance Churches of the Philippines;
  • Seventh-Day Adventist;
  • Salvation Army;
  • Catholics for Reproductive Health, and
  • Episcopal Church of the Philippines.

    'Willing Willie' , still off-air this week | 'Willing Willie' makeover, underway

    The controversial host of Willing Willie, Willie Revillame previously announced that his show will be back in airing episodes on television after a self-imposed 2-week break following the pulling out of ads of its sponsors due to the alleged child abuse on its March 12 episode. However, fans have to wait longer since the break apparently has been extended.

    The 2-week hiatus has passed but "Willing Willie" will not air tonight, according to recent reports. There is also no official and definite word yet on when 'Willing Willie' will return on television.

    In a recent interview of Willie Revillame's co-host Shalani Soledad though, she said that they will be back soon. She added that their set has undergone a make over as well.

    “Sa mga milyong-milyon na naga-abang kung kelan po babalik ang ‘Willing Willie,’ malapit na po. And of course, marami ang ginagawa, marami kaming ini-improve sa show para pag-balik natin mas lalo pang mag-enjoy ang ating mga [manonood],” Soledad announced on "Paparazzi", yesterday.

    “Meron na tayong bagong flooring, which we are very proud [of]. This is the first LED flooring sa buong Pilipinas. So abangan niyo po ‘yan,” she added.

    Meanwhile, here's a Noypistuff poll started a couple of weeks ago. The number of votes is nearing 5,000. You can still cast yours though since Noypistuff has extended it for another week.

    With the recent turn out of events, Willie Revillame has announced that his show "Willing Willie" will be off air for two weeks or until he makes up his mind of continuing the show without the sponsors.

    What do you think, guys? Should "Willing Willie" go on air once again? Or is it better for TV5 not to have the show anymore?

    Poll: ''Willing Willie", to return or not to return? Cast your votes!

    Background

    The controversial March 12 episode of "Willing Willie" where a 6-year old boy named JanJan Suan did a macho dancing act as his talent in a segment of the show, has been found to constitute child abuse by some government agencies.

    The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board is currently investigating on the matter. Meanwhile, the show's sponsors have pulled out their ads on the show.

    American Idol bids farewell to Stefano Langone | Who's next?

    "American Idol 10" viewers once again voted off another male!

    Said to have been over-exposed, Stefano Langone, 22, is the second male to be eliminated from the competition since the Final 13 started performing. He is the third male to be voted off and second male to be sent home - Casey Abrams was saved by the judges in one elimination episode. For the first 4 elimination episodes, 5 girls already left the competition.

    So who's going home next?

    Here's Noypi's prediction of the 'bottom 3' for next week.

    Hailey Reinhart, Jacob Lust and Casey Abrams.

    Hailey Reinhart and Jacob Lust have been in the 'bottom three' for more than once. Casey Abrams, on the other hand, got the least number of votes once but was saved by the judges.

    With this history, I think one of them is finally going home next week. :D

    By the way, The "American Idol 10" finale will be on May 24 and 25.

    RH Bill Debate: Baguio Priest to Rep. Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel, "Ang ganda-gandang babae niya...pero ang pangit-pangit ng stand niya."

    A sermon of a Baguio Cathedral priest rather went controversial when he threw a remark on Reproductive Health (RH) Bill supporter, former Akbayan party-list Rep. Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel.

    A screen capture of Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel's RH Bill Video

    "Ang ganda-gandang babae niya...pero ang pangit-pangit ng stand niya, Risa Hontiveros," the priest reportedly said during a mass.

    A few moments later, he ordered the church-goers to stop hearing the mass and leave if they support the RH Bill.

    "Kung meron nakikimisa dito pero pro-RH bill… Please, go out. It's useless," the priest said.

    "What is this mass for if you are pro-RH bill? What is going to Church for if you're pro-RH bill?," he added.

    In an interview by ABS-CBN, the ex-representative said she was shocked by the statements of the priest.

    “Nakaka-shock, nakakalungkot, nakakagalit. Can’t they let people worship in peace? Mahal na araw pa naman ngayon."

    “Don't use the pulpit, which belongs to all the lay people, as attack vantage point,” Hontiveros-Baraquel told ABS-CBN.

    Recent reports say the priest has apologized to the former legislature but he was firm in stand to send RH bill supporters out of church.

    Guadalupe Fire leaves 3,000 families homeless (Video)

    Guadalupe Fire leaves 3,000 families homeless

    Yesterday's Fire incident at Guadalupe caused at least 3,000 families to lose their homes, reports ABS-CBN.

    The fire broke out at noontime on Tuesday where it reached general alarm in a matter of 20 minutes. It was caused by an unattended rice cooker and personal computer, according to investigators.

    Firefighters from across Metro Manila were called to stop the blaze from eating more houses. They had a hard time controlling the fire though, due to the narrow passageways in the area.

    It took the fire marshals 3 hours to control the fire which caused LPG to explode and damaged billboard ads.

    There were 2 reported injuries from the blaze but no casualties.

    The San Carlos seminary, the Nuestra Señora de Gracia parish church, and nearby gymnasiums and public schools have served temporary shelter for the fire victims.

    Taal Volcano Bulletin - April 18, 2011

    The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded today a total of 21 volcanic earthquakes around Taal Volcano - 11 more quakes than that of the previous day's data. Alert Level II is still not lifted due to the increased activities of the Volcano.

    Taal Volcano | Photo courtesy viamigo.com

    Here's Phivolcs bulletin on Taal Volcano posted on April 18, 2011:

    Twenty one (21) volcanic earthquakes were recorded by the seismic network around Taal Volcano (14.0000°N, 120.9833°E) during the past 24 hours. One (1) of these events which occurred at 10:06 A.M. yesterday was felt by residents at Intensity II in Brgy. Calauit. Water temperature at the Main Crater Lake (west-side via Alas-as) slightly increased from 29.8°C to 30.1°C. Gas measurements conducted at Taal Main Crater Lake last January, February and March 2011 yielded carbon dioxide (CO2) emission values of 2,250 tonnes per day (t/d), 1,875 t/d and 4,670 t/d respectively. This large rise in C02 concentration indicates gas release from the magma at depth. Result of the ground deformation survey (precise leveling) conducted around the Volcano Island last 05-11 April 2011 showed that volcano edifice is slightly inflated as compared with the 02-09 February 2011 survey.

    Alert Level 2 is hoisted over Taal Volcano with the interpretation that magma has been intruding towards the surface, as manifested by CO2 being released in the Main Crater Lake and increase in seismic activity. Hence, PHIVOLCS advises the public that the Main Crater, Daang Kastila Trail and Mt. Tabaro (1965 -1977 Eruption Site) are strictly off-limits because sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate. Breathing air with high concentration of gases can be lethal to human, animals and even cause damage to vegetation. In addition, it is reminded that entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended. DOST-PHIVOLCS is closely monitoring Taal Volcano’s activity and any new significant development will be immediately relayed to all concerned.

    American Idol Results Night 6: April 15 Top 8 Elimination Episode

    Since the Top 13 Finalists started performing in the 10th season of the world-famous "American Idol", girl contestants seemed to find it hard to get enough support from the show's viewers, making 5 of them say 'goodbye' to the competition one-by-one each elimination episode.

    For the first time, a male finalist has been sent home after a nationwide voting - although Casey Abrams was previously voted off but he dodged being eliminated after getting the judges' single 'save vote' for this season.

    During the latest episode of the talent search, host Ryan Seacrest announced that it was the end of the line for the charming singer from Nashville, 25-year old Paul McDonald after garnering the lowest number of votes.

    With Paul McDonald in the 'bottom three' were Stefano Langone and Haley Reinhart who might be the 'next' to go home since it is not the first time for the two to be in the 'bottom three'.

    McDonald rendered "Maggie May" as his 'goodbye' performance in the show. This was requested by judge Jennifer Lopez who became teary-eyed.

    Meanwhile, Season 1 champion Kelly Clarkson and country singer Jason Aldean sang "Don't You Wanna Stay' during last's night show. Pop singer Rihanna also showcased her new ballad "California King Bed".

    The Top 7 remaining finalists will again battle it out on stage next week.

    P.S. Here are the judges' comments on each contestant during the perfomance night episode:

    Paul McDonald “Old Time Rock and Roll” by Bob Seger
    Steven: I love your crazy wild abandon, how it translates to the audience. Jennifer: Every time you come out here, you’re going a little bit further, a little bit further, it’s great to watch. It’s like watching a diamond in the rough and every week, a little more polish. Randy: America you just witnessed the first number at the Paul McDonald concert. I love it. You are definitely an artist.

    Lauren Alaina “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus
    Jennifer: I loved hearing you sing this, the tear in your voice. You sang it so beautifully, you don’t need to steal anyone’s votes. You’re getting plenty of your own. Randy: The Lauren we saw in Nashville is roaring back. It sounds like it was written for you. Amazing. Steven: I love what you bring to a song, and what a song brings to you. Beautiful. You Move me beyond tears.

    Stefano Langone “End of the Road” by Boyz II Men
    Randy: Dude! Randy name drops friend from Boys II Men who will be TEXTING HIM ANY MINUTE to say “your man Stefano just slayed the song.” You made the right move at the right time. Best vocal to date. In it to win it! Steven: You know how to milk a song. This is so not the end of the road for you. JJennifer: You got it. It’s about being a great performer. You did it. You did it tonight.”

    Scotty McCreery “I Cross My Heart” by George Strait
    Steven: Scotty I just love your voice. You did it again. You’re good. Jennifer: Everybody wants us to be tough with you guys, but you guys are so damn good. I just want to say wow. Was it my fav song choice? No. But you sang it beautifully. Randy: If it ain’t broke don’t even consider fixing it. A star is born on this stage. You’ve grown so much. I ‘m a huge ginormous fan.

    Casey Abrams “Nature Boy” by Nat King Cole
    Jennifer: I gotta say, at the beginning I was nervous. I hope America got that. Randy: We have a real true artist on the show. We’ve never had anyone like you ever. It’s about embracing who you are. I can see you making an extended Buble kind of record. Genius. Steven: You are an artist in the truest sense of the world. You do what’s in your heart. YOu believed what was in your heart. You are so good man.

    Jacob Lusk “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel
    Steven: It’s astounding how angelic you sing. Incredible. God bless you and your voice. Jennifer: Who does that? You are such a gifted vocalist. You pulled the chills out of me. Randy: I listen to every word. I believe you. I love that you took your time with this. It was perfect. Great job.

    Haley Reinhart “Call Me” by Blondie
    Randy: I didn’t love the beginning, it sounded very karaoke to me. It wasn’t a showcase for your voice for me. Steven: I agree, but when you nail chorus… you sang it heavy you sang it great. Jennifer: I love when you started, and I kind of agree with Randy, but I’m afraid to say anything negative, I don’t want to lose any of the girls!

    James Durbin “Heavy Metal” by Sammy Hagar
    Jennifer: That felt really really real. I loved that. They are killing it dead. That was crazy. Randy: I’m happy you stuck to your guns. Tonight you did you. Durbin rawks! Steven: Outstanding Durbin.
